Progress Report of the Committee on Examination of Automated Blood Pressure Measurement Devices

This report was presented at the Membership Meeting of the Councul on Epidemiology and Prevention - September 20, 1978, Katsura Room, Hotel New-Otani, Convention Hotol of the VIII World Congress of Cardiology, Tokyo, Japan.

The Committee on Examination of Automated Blood Pressure Measurement Devices was approved its organization in the 11th General Meeting of the Association for Cerebro-Cardiovascular Disease Control held in Fukuoka City June , 1976.

The progress until today was presented at the 13th General Meeting held in Kyptp May, 1978.(Abstract: JACD, 13, 11-19, 1978)

The Committee examined 18 automated blood pressure measurement devices which were offered from manufactures and were selected by the Committee sold on the market until August, 1977.

As regards the reliability of measured values by automated blood pressure measurement devices and the agreement of measured values with auscultatory method, there is a matter of how to deal with the relation of automated blood pressure devices and the blood pressure measurement by auscultatory method which have been used by many doctors for along time, we have to indicate to matter of auscultatory method.

The system of the examination of automated blood pressure measurement devices is shown in Fig 1. In this system, as the raeding of usual auscultatory method, we took the the record obtained when three observers auscultatory the same vascular(Korotkov) sound. CAL is the method of recording the ausculator's recognition point as the blood pressure measurement point without seeing the mercury syphgmomanometers into the data recorded and on the electro-magnetic osccillograph. Cuff pressure changed by pressure converter can be displayed by 1 mmHg on the same paper. The same vascular sound is simultaneously recorded in the audio-tape recorded and can be always played. Thus the examination of this time with the mutual comparable system on the blood pressure measured values by the objective recording is different from other system reported in the past.

Which point of waves recorded on the electro-magnetic oscillograph sould be recognized as the point of bloog pressure measurement?

We have to have more examination about this problem. Sasaki and Hasunuma presented the paper about the objective indexes of measurement point of systolic and blood pressure at this Congress.
